Candy's world was first upended back in May of 2016. She spent months fighting through everything the standard medical playbook could throw at her, enduring grueling rounds of chemotherapy, major surgery, and even more chemo. For a brief seven months, she finally got to breathe a sigh of relief during remission. Sadly, the peace did not last and the cancer returned with an absolute vengeance.
Navigating a terminal illness is incredibly daunting on its own, but Candy is doing it without a partner by her side. As a widow whose parents have already passed away, and with her two adult sons living on opposite ends of California, she often finds herself physically isolated from her family. Yet, her motivation remains fiercely simple, she just wants to stay alive to watch her boys grow up and live long enough to meet her future grandkids. Driven by that love, she has reached a point where she is willing to try absolutely anything to save her life.
When Candy eventually walked through the doors of the foundation, she found so much more than just a medical clinic, she found a true lifeline and a profound sense of belonging. What makes the center so special to her is that is is not just her own car, but the incredible, visible transformations she is witnessing in real time every single day.
She admits that it is heartbreaking to see new patients arrive in wheelchairs or barely able to hold their heads up, but it makes it all the more miraculous to watch those exact same people walking, smiling, and regaining their energy after just a few treatments. While a permanent cure is always the ultimate goal, Candy explains that the center gives her something just as precious in the short term. It gives her the physical strength, energy and vitality to actually liver her life, rather than just endure it.
